From the Taisho to early Showa periods, a silk fabric called "Isesaki Meisen" flourished in Isesaki City, Gunma Prefecture. With its bold and modern patterns, vibrant color combinations, and free-flowing designs, this fabric easily surpassed the norms of its time. There were women who chose to wear this fabric themselves.
In an era where "women should be like this," they unhesitatingly chose their favorite patterns and colors. It was a very small, yet definite exercise of freedom.
Meisen was widely loved by women of the time as formal wear for common people. However, times changed, weavers decreased, and the lights of the factories went out. Now, it is no longer possible to create new Isesaki Meisen.
